Madison Good, of OSU's Thompson Library Special Collections, will discuss the late 19th and early 20th century book cover designer and illustrator, Margaret Armstrong, one of the most recognized and celebrated book artists of her time. Good will discuss Armstrong's career, highlights of her work, and Armstrong books held in the Special Collections.
Margaret Armstrong (1867–1944) was a cover designer, illustrator, and author. She began her career as a book cover designer in the late 1880s. During her career, she designed more than 314 book covers and book bindings for working for Charles Scribner's Sons, A.C. McClurg and others, and for authors Charles Dickens, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and Robert Louis Stevenson. Her work was influenced by Art Nouveau and incorporated plant-related motifs, bold colors, gold stamping, frequently with an asymmetrical design presenting an illusion of movement.
