This month, we’re thrilled to welcome Sarah Corbet and David Bruce to share the inspiring story behind the Lyonville Hemp House—a remarkable example of sustainable living, creative design, and hands-on resilience.Sarah & David's journey began with the purchase of a vacant 7.5-acre block in Lyonville. From there, they embarked on an ambitious project: to build a thermo-efficient home using hemp, a natural material known for its insulation, breathability, and environmental benefits.
The result is more than just a house—it’s a living system. The Lyonville Hemp House showcases the power of passive solar design and budget-conscious owner-building, proving that sustainability doesn’t have to come at the cost of comfort or beauty.
Today, the property is a thriving hub of self-sufficiency. Sarah and David produce their own fruit, vegetables, berries, eggs, goat’s milk and honey. Designed with permaculture principles, both the house and gardens work in harmony to reduce labour while maximising productivity.
Come along to hear Sarah & David’s story, see what’s possible with natural building materials, and be inspired by a lifestyle rooted in care for the land and thoughtful design.
