Title of Exhibit: Metamorphosis
Bio: Alexis (Lexi) Rockwell is a multimedia artist working in Pennsylvania. She is a junior at Lycoming College Studying both Art History and Studio Art as a double major. Rockwell uses her art as a vessel for emotional processing, as well as a mode of creative exploration. She has been practicing art for over ten years and has been featured in galleries such as the Manos Gallery of Pittsburgh, a teen exhibition at the Mattress Factory, and the Lycoming Arts Gallery. Rockwell’s goal for her creative practice is to allow interpretation into the meaning of her works, while releasing and visualizing hard to situate emotions. In the future, she aims to study Art History in graduate school and work in an art museum setting doing curation or exhibitions management.
Statement: This body of work is entitled “Metamorphosis” and examines several themes of growing up, getting older, and moving on. The inspiration for this work came from a conversation I had with peers of mine about leaving home and pursuing our adult lives. It is a play on my desire to leave the place I am from so that my metaphorical wings can spread and I can truly live out the life I have sought after all these years. Though, growth does not come without remembrance of our past. I may wish to flee the town that was holding me back, but part of me will always be back behind those county lines. As I have gotten older, I’ve realized growing up doesn’t mean forgetting my past, but forgiving it. The person I was all those years ago is not me, but I was once her. I have fought to be where I am today, and while I celebrate the success, I cannot invalidate the process. So, “Metamorphosis” holds themes of blossoming into who I am becoming but also appreciating who I had to become first.
