An international jazz supergroup of bandleaders described as “absolutely crazy good” (Gilles Peterson), lvdf bring the music from their debut EP, as exciting as any release in 2025. The line up includes four artists at the forefront of their respective, boundary-pushing jazz scenes: saxophonist Alex Hitchcock, pianist and synth soundscaper, Maria Chiara Argirò, double bassist Michelangelo Scandroglio and drummer Myele Manzanza. Their music mixes contemporary grooves with jazz traditions, vibrant rhythms, gorgeous melodies and complex, flowing polyrhythms and emotive soundscapes.

lvdf was born out of a collaborative workshop in the coastal Tuscan town of Follonica and refined during sell-out performances at Ronnie Scott’s and appearances at London Jazz Festival and Bergamo Jazz Festival, ‘lvdf’ is an acronym for ‘La Via Del Ferro’. Italian for ‘The Iron Way’, this references ancient trade routes that connected the Italian iron industry to Europe and beyond.
Here’s some music:
Described as a “virtuoso” by The Guardian, saxophonist and Ivor Novello-nominated composer Alex Hitchcock is a leading voice on the international jazz stage. Emerging from the vibrant London jazz scene he has worked across Europe, the US, and further afield, and built an international reputation, with sellout appearances in NYC and London, his playing is powerful, exciting and contemporary.
Maria Chiara Argirò (piano/synths) has been a central figure in the UK jazz, classical and electronic worlds since she moved to London from Rome over a decade ago. She’s collaborated with everyone from These New Puritans and Jono McCleery to Jamie Leeming alongside output with Moonfish. During 2025 she supported US legend Kamasi Washington during his tour of Italy, appeared at Manchester Jazz Festival, and provided an unforgettable gig for us at the Samuel Worth Chapel in her duo with Bruno Heinen.
Multi-award-winning double bassist Michelangelo Scandroglio is one of the most exciting musicians to emerge from Italy in recent years, playing and recording with the likes of Logan Richardson, Enrico Rava, Ben van Gelder, Gregory Hutchinson, Jeff Ballard, and Shai Maestro and performing at renowned clubs and festivals across Europe including Barcelona Jazz Festival and the Bimhuis, Sunset/Sunside , Umbria Jazz , Ronnie’s Scott , Stockholm Jazz Festival, The Jazz Gallery, and the Vortex Jazz Club.
New Zealand-born drummer Myele Manzanza is simply one of the most exciting and energetic jazz musicians internationally, and as well as releasing five albums has toured and collaborated with the likes of Jordan Rakei, Theo Parrish, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Recloose and Amp Fiddler, gaining widespread acclaim along the way. His own band, with Matthew Sheens and Matt Penman has shared stages with the likes of Hiatus Kaiyote, The Bad Plus, Alfa Mist, and sold out venues including The Jazz Café and Ronnie Scott’s.
