About this Event
Tonight’s offering will have two silent films with music performed live. The first will be Le Voyage dans la Lune, or Trip to the Moon, by Georges Meliés. It was produced in 1902. Meliés was a pioneer in realizing the full potential of editing and manipulating this new medium. Meliés has such a light touch, I wanted to avoid heavy orchestration. I remembered a film by François Truffaut that used the music of a French film composer who died in World War II. I felt it perfectly matched Meliés vision.
Our second film is F.W. Murnau’s brilliant Nosfertu. Originally to be the Dracula story, due to copyright issues with Bram Stoker’s widow, the names were changed. My colleague, Jory Herman, arranged a score from classical compositions of the time.
Luscious Noise breaks the barrier of tradition by bringing classical music performances down to earth in unique settings. Drawing on musicians from the San Diego Symphony, its focus is creating compelling combinations of music, dance and film that are meant to become an experience for the audience that transcends the sum of the parts.
