About this Event

Join us for a lunchtime concert featuring students from NYU Steinhardt’s Woodwind Studies program. Performing solo and flute choir pieces, this recital will be centered around Valerie Coleman’s piece Umoja.
This event will take place in person at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library in the 1st Floor Corner Space. Register at https://www.nypl.org/events/programs/2025/10/22/lunchtime-flute-concert-students-nyu-steinhardt to reserve a seat.
To join the event in person | Doors will open 30 minutes before the program begins. For free events, we generally overbook to ensure a full house. Priority will be given to those who have registered in advance, but registration does not guarantee admission. All registered seats are released shortly before start time, and seats may become available at that time. A standby line will form 30 minutes before the program.
ABOUT UMOJA

In its original form, Umoja, the Swahili word for Unity and the first principle of the African Dispora holiday Kwanzaa, was composed as a simple song for women’s choir. It embodied a sense of ‘tribal unity’, through the feel of a drum circle, the sharing of history through traditional “call and response” form and the repetition of a memorable sing-song melody.

Umoja has seen the creation of many versions that are like siblings to one another, similar in many ways, but each with a unique voice that is informed by Valerie Coleman’s ever evolving creativity and perspective. For this performance, each of the solo pieces will represent different countries.
