George Yeo is an astute observer of international relations and regional politics, having served as Singapore’s Foreign Minister between 2004-11, among his 23 years of public service in the Singapore government. In 'Musings,' the three series of books that came about from his conversations with writer Woon Tai Ho, he mused over a variety of issues, ranging from his identity and life to history, religion and geopolitics.
His reflections, particularly on how Southeast Asian countries, through ASEAN, navigated the changing global landscape over the decades, make for a fascinating read. He likens ASEAN to the cacophonous music from Javanese gamelan “envelop all who come into its presence without being dominating or oppressing.” Its soft and flexible character has enabled ASEAN to adapt to the shifting global order and retain its own balance, he said.
George Yeo is currently a visiting scholar at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy of the National University of Singapore and the founding patron of its Asia Competitiveness Institute.
From September 1988 to May 2011, he served in various ministerial portfolios in the Singapore government. He studied engineering at Cambridge University on a president’s scholarship, graduating with a double first in 1976, and had an MBA from the Havard Business School. He served in the Singapore Armed Forces with the final rank of brigadier general before entering politics.
Join us for this lunchtime talk with George Yeo to hear his views about ASEAN in the present world and his thoughts on geopolitics in the region and beyond. 'Musings' will also be available for purchase.
