Jacob Jordaens’ Nativity is one of the stars of the European Old Masters collection at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery.
Baroque painter Jacob Jordaens the Elder (1593-1678) was one of the most famous painters of the 17th Century. He was a follower of the artist Rubens, whose influence is evident in his work. Later, however, Jordaens became internationally recognised in his own right. He carried out commissions for European royalty and developed his own distinct style.
Currently undergoing conservation, exciting investigations have been taking place under the watchful eye of Dr. Andrea Seim, a dendrochronologist (tree-ring dating is used to date panel paintings). X-rays of the painting also reveal some fascinating secrets hidden beneath the surface.
The Nativity will be going back on display in the European Old Masters Gallery very soon.
Join us for an exploration of this rich history in time for the festive season.
