Martyn Harry: Eau de Cologne for oboe and piano (2023-25, world premiere)
Martyn Harry's new work for oboe and piano draws on the symbology of the original famous ‘Eau de Cologne’, which was originally developed for medicinal purposes but during the invasion of the city by the French became a touchstone of Cologne's identity and a symbol of resistance. The work’s movement titles drawing inspiration from key concepts associated with the fragrance – Kölnisch Wasser, 4711, Glockengasse, Abgesang (Aftermath), Aqua Mirabilis. In the second half of the concert, Ewan, a former St Hilda’s alumnus, performs Barber’s ‘Summer Music’ for wind quintet with four of the college’s first year music students.
