The Two Pianos of Jeff Barnhart & Neville Dickie
Pianist, composer, arranger, vocalist, bandleader, Jeff Barnhart is all these things and more. A professional musician from the age of fourteen, Jeff maintains a punishing schedule, living life on the road for something like forty weeks a year performing at jazz clubs and festivals throughout America and Europe. He has worked with some of the biggest names in the business (Bucky Pizzarelli, Bob Wilber) and, with trombonist Jim Fryer, co-leads, the Fryer-Barnhart International Jazz Band. An authority on early twentieth century piano schools and their pianists, the man from Mystic, Connecticut returns to the Lit & Phil to perform alongside his friend and fellow pianist Neville Dickie.
Born in County Durham, Neville Dickie is a master of stride piano. Relocating to London to pursue a career in music, Neville was approached by the BBC to appear on national radio. Hundreds of broadcasts and studio recording sessions followed (Robin’s Return, 1969, reached the dizzying heights of no.33 in the pop charts!) and Back to Boogie (released in 1975) sold in excess of 100,000 copies. Shout for Joy (recorded with his Rhythm Kings, 1997) featured Fats Waller’s guitarist Al Casey. In a long career, Neville has worked with many other top class musicians, including fellow pianist Ray Bryant, Kenny Davern and Don Ewell, and continues to perform on both sides of the Atlantic (notably at the annual Scott Joplin International Ragtime Festival in Missouri)
