Luis Verde is an award-winning alto saxophonist. Born in Cáceres, Spain, Luis began classical music studies, later turning to jazz, specialising in jazz saxophone at the Basque Conservatory of Music (Musikene) where his tutors included Miguel Blanco, Jorge Rossy and Perico Sambeat. In 2023 Luis completed his master’s thesis (Norwegian Academy of Music, Oslo) which focused upon the implementation of improvisation as a structural part of compositions for large jazz ensemble.
At the forefront of contemporary jazz in Spain, Luis has released albums as a bandleader, including World of Distractions (2012) and Vientos Cruzados (2018) and features on recordings by the Jerry González & Miguel Blanco Big Band (A Tribute to the Fort Apache Big Band, 2014) and La Resistencia Ensemble (2017). A prominent figure on the Madrid jazz scene, Luis has toured extensively throughout Europe and South America, appearing at numerous jazz festivals, including the North Sea Jazz Festival, Milan and San Sebastián. Recently relocating to Newcastle, this is a rare opportunity to hear Luis Verde in concert with the Dean Stockdale Trio, right here at the Lit & Phil!
