Friday Lunchtime Concerts take place on the Kelburn campus of Victoria University of Wellington, in various venues, from 12:10–1:00 pm. The concerts are free, open to the public and no booking is required, although seating is limited (according to each venue).
Programme:
Leonie Holmes “Fragment II” (2016)
Shostakovich Quartet No. 14 in F sharp, opus 142 (1973)
On Friday 19th of April NZSQ will take you on a journey through time with Shostakovich’s 14th Quartet which was dedicated to the cellist of the Beethoven Quartet, who was one of his closest friends. With many idiosyncratic references to the dedicatee in the music, to what degree has the composer painted a personal portrait, and how much do the character and emotional content of the work reflect his personal traits? Come and meet this complex and fascinating being, in turns roguish, contemplative, feisty, and deeply communicative.
NZSQ will also present a work written by New Zealand composer Leonie Holmes. Fragment II is an exploration of a questioning three-note theme (first introduced by the cello) which takes listeners through an introspective, lyrical and haunting musical landscape.
