What Are Mushrooms, and What Do They Do?Dr Greg Thorn grew up in London Ontario and became interested in natural history through the family garden, long summer vacations, and the local McIlwraith Field Naturalists group (now Nature London). Six summers as a naturalist in Algonquin Provincial Park built on this and introduced him to the world of mushrooms and other fungi; he led Park visitors on bird hikes, tree hikes, wildflower hikes, … and mushroom hikes. His graduate studies at the University of Guelph (with the late George Barron) and the University of Toronto (with David Malloch) were followed by positions in Japan, Michigan, Indiana, Wyoming, and finally back to London as a faculty member in the Department of Biology, University of Western Ontario. His research is focused on the ecology and diversity of fungi. He teaches courses on Biodiversity, Plant Evolution, Field Botany, and Mycology, and is the Curator of the Dr. Laurie L. Consaul Herbarium (UWO).
