Join us at Bodine on February 27 at 11:30 for a Lunch & Learn with guest speaker Durant Fleming, author of the new book Unleashing Dyslexia. Durant, who was raised and educated in Memphis, knew something was amiss when his parents sat him down to inform him that he would be repeating the third grade. To Durant, the third grade was a painful blur, and one thing was certain: this strong-willed, dyslexic child wanted nothing to do with school ever again. However, Durant did return to the third grade again, but this time he had the dedicated support of his loving parents, passionate teachers, enthusiastic coaches, tenacious reading specialists, and three academically inclined brothers. As a result of the critical support he received, Durant stumbled forward on through elementary school and into middle school. Then, he began to gain academic traction during high school. Completing his undergraduate degree in Communications, he happily gathered three Master’s degrees and earned his doctorate. He then went on to become a career educator, first as a teacher, then a vice principal, and then as a Head of School.
After many years in the educational world, often working with students with dyslexia, their teachers, and families, Durant decided that it was time to write Unleashing Dyslexia. This easy-to-read book offers a unique glimpse into the dyslexic mind; it draws from many poignant stories from Durant’s journey and offers practical principles to effectively support students with dyslexia. This encouraging book was specifically written to support teachers, learning specialists, and especially the parents of dyslexic learners. Each chapter concludes with practical questions for discussion.
Copies of Unleashing Dyslexia and Durant’s previous book, Splendid Agony: Celebrating Dyslexia, will be available to purchase at this event.
