Happy Lunar New Year! Join us to watch a film about Meilin's journey through the trials of being a teen girl who also turns into a giant Red Panda and folds red money envelopes while you watch.
Hong Bao is the Chinese tradition of folding the red money envelopes received as gifts during the Lunar New Year into simple origami. Join us to create colorful origami animals, money bags, lanterns, kimonos, Hanfu shoes, lotus, and more!
Meilin "Mei" Lee (Rosalie Chiang), a 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian student who one day discovers that whenever she gets too excited or stressed, she turns into a giant red panda, but she can turn back if she becomes calm. This “condition” turns out to be linked to her ancestors, who have a shared history with the species as a family curse. Still, the curse can be contained by performing a special ritual on one specific night… which, to Mei’s luck, coincides with a concert of her favorite boy band. All of this, of course, as she deals with everything puberty throws her way. The animation style, which incorporates anime influences, enhances the emotional depth and creativity of the story.
Directed by Domee Shi, rated PG.
We will have a self-serve cup of Ramen Noodles and an Asian soda sampling station, while supplies last.
