LUIS MARTÍN LECTURE SERIES IN THE HUMANITIES | Picturing Holy Women in the Spanish Empire, 1620–1800
Kelly Donahue-Wallace, professor of art history, University of North Texas; Miranda Saylor, 2021–23 Center for Spain in America (CSA) Curatorial Fellow, Meadows Museum
This four-part lecture series (four Fridays, October 7, 14, 21 & 28) will take a deeper look at artworks and themes related to the exhibition “Picturing Holy Women in the Spanish Empire, 1620–1800.” Saylor and Donahue-Wallace will examine the significant roles women played in shaping spirituality in early modern Spain and Mexico. Each talk will focus on a distinct topic ranging from exalted representations of the Virgin Mary, visionary saints, convent culture, and printed portraits of nuns. Together, these lectures will study how images uphold their female subjects as exemplary models of virtue while simultaneously offering a dynamic picture of women as spiritual leaders, mystics, and authors.
This program is made possible by gifts from the Fannie and Stephen Khan Charitable Foundation and the Eugene McDermott Foundation.
$60 for the four-part series; free for Meadows Museum members and SMU faculty/staff/students
