Congelese artist Lucie Kamuswekera's work is currently on view in the exhibition 'Embroidered Past, Imagined Future in Congo' at Amsab-ISG. Kamuswekera tells the turbulent history of her country through embroidery. The expo is an initiative of researchers from Ghent University and The Ohio State University.
Lucie Kamuswekera (°1944) is an artist and one of the few Congolese women of her generation who helps shape the collective memory of Congo through her art. She learned the embroidery technique during colonial times and uses it today to critique the Congolese colonial past, but also the more recent political history of the Congo Wars that shaped her own life.
For the UGent Alumni-day, we've organised a guided visit to the exhibition led by the amazing Margot Luyckfasseel. After the tour we can catch up over a coffee back at the Rozier.
✏️ We meet at Rozier 44 at 15:00. The tour will take 45minutes (including film fragment of the artist)
The tour is free, but you have to register here: https://alumnidag.ugent.be/nl-be/programma/activiteiten/expo-lucie-kamuswekera-embroidered-past-imagined-future-in-congo/
