About this Event
Afrofuturism has been codified in creative and science disciplines, including theater, music, literature, fashion, and science fiction. The 2018 and 2022 installments of the movie Black Panther then brought afrofuturism to the big screen, showcasing an emerging afrofuturistic approach to architecture in almost every scene. This talk will explore what that means in research and design from perspectives of imagination, technology, the future, and liberation.
Annicia Streete is an assistant professor in the LSU School of Architecture. Born and raised in the twin-island republic of Trinidad and Tobago, her academic and professional background is multi-disciplinary. She teaches and practices across the architecture, construction, and engineering disciplines and currently serves as the EDUCATE co-chair for the National Organization of Minority Architects, which also has a student chapter at LSU. Her research on afrofuturism focuses on heritage documentation and building technology practices within African diasporic communities throughout the Caribbean, Latin America, and South Louisiana.
