The Lone Pine Time Trials Cleanup Weekend is coming up on May 2nd-4th. This has become as much a tradition for dedicated volunteers as the Lone Pine Time Trials event itself. And without this weekend of pre-event maintenance and surface repair, the Time Trials simply could not happen! As the old abandoned Manzanar Airfield runway ages and the surrounding Owens Valley landscape slowly tries to reclaim its footprint, the paved surface requires a lot of attention. 2024 was no exception. The Eastern Sierra Nevada may or may not get pummeled with snow and rain again this year. So fingers crossed, we won't have as much silt and debris as last May. After yet another recon visit late last year, it was confirmed that deep weeds have invaded vast stretches of the pavement, and some of the debris and silt remain on large stretches of the course surface after the substantial 2023/2024 flooding episode throughout the region. One never knows what each year will bring, and the weather remains to be seen this year. But a duty to be expected is the patching of surface breakup after the weeds have been cleared with our trusty pull-drag. Volunteers make this happen each year and the more able bodies we have to help with patching and clearing the runway, the better the upcoming event will be for all... and for years to come! Sure, it’s a lot of hard work. But the LPTT Committee ensures that all in attendance are well fed and properly hydrated throughout the weekend. This isn't just a work duty, but a weekend of camping at the Diaz Lake Campground full of socializing and camaraderie with fellow Time Trial volunteers around the evening campfire. We are all hoping that there won’t be more damaging storms passing through this winter and we can convene around the Lone Pine Campground campfire once again. Please volunteer and take part in this year’s Cleanup Weekend! More information and updates will be posted here.
