lowheaven | Toronto, ON
"lowheaven’s sound oscillates somewhere between post-hardcore, screamo, blackened noise, and metal. The Toronto band consists of local punk veterans Dan Thomson (vocals/guitar), Mikey Buchta (vocals/bass) and Alex Pley (guitar/keys). Thomson, formerly of Canadian post-hardcore band Sparrows, explains candidly, “We’re not a happy listen, lowheaven is something that has got a lot of weight.”
Like many bands, lowheaven formed beneath the dark clouds of the COVID-19 pandemic. Unlike many bands, however, lowheaven credits the pandemic to their success as collaborators. As Buchta put it, “lowheaven was a COVID creation brought by the depths of despair and uncertainty but the desire to overcome the unknown.” With the stakes raised and the emotional gravity at its strongest, the pandemic forced each bandmate to reflect on who they were and what they wanted, both as musicians and individuals, before they had even begun. Thomson recalls his life breaking down, explaining, “I consider myself lucky to be able to channel it into something, as punishing as it was to do that.” The time on their hands was fueled into writing and their despair at the world was what powered their art.
In the first six months of 2020, lowheaven produced twenty crushing songs. lowheaven’s musical range is vast, varying from impenetrable screamo to melodic post-metal, sometimes even in the same song. They take influence from bands like Converge, Deftones, Radiohead, and Planes Mistaken by Stars. Their debut EP, Collapse, is scheduled to be released this fall on Skeletal Lightning, and they have plans to tour as soon as possible."
