About this Event

How do you form glass into a desired shape? This workshop will help you understand how glass moves and behaves. This class covers the basics of casting glass objects using the lost wax technique. You will learn to melt glass into a mold and create unique designs with the lost wax technique. Each week, lessons will build towards your personal project. Topics include mold recipes, wax working, kiln use, firing schedules.

The last two weeks will be dedicated to learning cutting and polishing processes, and an introduction to other cold-working techniques that will give your piece a finished look.

In this 7-week class, you will work with wax models, pour refractory molds, and create kiln-formed glass pieces. Most students complete one or two objects, each up to 1 inch thick and 4 inches high. This course requires standing for periods of time longer than 30 minutes.

We will also discuss firing schedules and different glass types. Hand-outs will cover all topics. No experience required.

What to Expect: Participants can expect to leave with at least 1 object. Clean-up time is included in the duration of class, and usually the last 20 minutes of class are dedicated to cleaning your workstation. Read more about how to prepare for class on our Registration Info page.

Kilnforming work involves a mix of seated and standing activities. A particulate respirator mask is required when working with fine glass powders or unloading kilns after firing and would be provided for you if needed. Handling glass and tools may require a certain level of dexterity. To learn more about accessibility the Accessibility page on our website.

Eligibility: No previous experience required. Open to ages 14 and up.

Pick-up: The glass needs to be fused in the kiln and cool down overnight, so the students will have to return to UrbanGlass once notified to pick up their work.

This is an in-person class taking place on-site at UrbanGlass.

We recommend registering for classes early to reserve your spot! We base materials, and teacher needs off of student enrollment. Early registration not only guarantees your spot in class, but also helps to ensure the class will run. Classes with low enrollment may be canceled within two weeks of the start date of class. Contact our Registrar of Education, Ari Eshoo, at [email protected] if you have questions about the class or would like to arrange a payment plan.
