Sara Rogers is a well-loved African-American philosophy professor who teaches courses on logic. She is married to Victor, a successful African-American painter. To celebrate the sale of one of his paintings, Victor decides to rent a house for the summer where he can focus on his art. Sara, however, is annoyed by his plan because she had hoped to spend the summer in the city researching a paper she is writing on ecstatic experiences. Nevertheless, she agrees to accompany him for the summer. Tensions rise as personal and professional conflicts mount, testing their already strained relationship. NR / 86 min.LOSING GROUND never received a full theatrical release in 1982, but in recent years has been celebrated as a milestone in American independent cinema and was was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2020. At the time of release it was the first feature-length narrative film directed by an African-American woman - filmmaker Kathleen Collins - since the 1920s.
