TRIBUTE TO JUAN FORMEL

The "Salsa Rolling Stones" have chosen LONDON as part to celebrate and retrace their 50-year career in music.

Founded in 1969 by bassist and composer Juan Formell - LOS VAN VAN is a formidable living legend of contemporary Cuban music. Accompanied by José Luis Quintana, known as "Changuito" and Cesar "Pupy" Pedroso, they invented "Songo": Cuban rhythm derived from sound, it is the predecessor of "timba" or "Cuban salsa", a kind of "salsa -son", but with a Cuban sound. Changuito will participate in the development of the style in Havana, which will be taken up by other percussionists and groups such as Ritmo Oriental, Los Latinos, Los Reyes 73, Grupo Irakere... Not afraid to experiment, they have added to their hits "Charanga" of trombones, synthesisers, electric bass, drum machines and violins, and play at mixing non-Latin contemporary styles such as jazz, rock or funk with Cuban pop.

In 2018, LEGADO, which means heritage in Spanish, is the group's first discographic creation since the death of Juan Formell in 2014. 50 YEARS ANNIVERSARY

Conductor, bass player and composer, since the beginning of his career he has performed a wide variety of rhythms such as son, jazz and Cuban folk music. Before founding Los Van Van, he was musical director for artists such as singer Elena Burke and the Orquesta Revé. That extensive experience plus the founding of the group has allowed Formell to acquire a unique sound and created the basis for his reputation as a notable musical innovator.

Once owner of his own orchestra, Formell has fused the instrumentation of the classic charanga orchestra, emphasising flute and violin, with North American elements such as electric guitar and drums. He coined the term “songo” to identify his new sound, in the fusion of traditional Cuban son, American pop and rock, and Brazilian bossa nova along with other musical styles. As a composer, his impressive arrangements have always been news in the daily life of Cuba, with great success among his Cuban audience and the followers of Salsa and Cuban music throughout the world.

On May 1, 2014, the teacher died in Havana, Cuba, leaving the general direction to his son, Samuel Formell Alfonso.

LOS VAN VAN “El Tren de la Musica Cubana”

is the flagship orchestra of Cuban popular music. They were founded on December 4, 1969 by the composer, bassist, arranger Juan Formell. After his death in May 2014, his son Samuel Formell took over the management of the group.

Considered internationally as the Rolling Stones of salsa, and nationally as The Train of Cuban Music, Los Van Van has been the cradle of prestigious musicians, and is the creative group and defender of SONGO, receiving influences as varied as of Rock n' Roll, Funk and Pop. The orchestra is distinguished by the use of picaresque in its lyrics, which is why it has been a chronicler of its times and has placed many phrases in popular slang. Van Van is a mandatory reference when talking about culture in Cuba and has remained in the public's preference for several generations.

Los Van Van have been nominated several times for the Grammy Awards.
