“Los Dug Dug’s are such an awesome part of garage rock history, that they can totally be forgiven for apostrophizing a plural noun. Having formed back in 1968, the band began in their hometown of Durango, Mexico. But it wasn’t until after The Beatles happened to the world when Los Dug Dug’s started to wield their own musical magic.
Once you move past the hard claims (that they were the one of the first Mexican rock bands to write songs in English or that they were one of the first Mexican bands to be inspired by the Fab Four), you’re left with their beautifully weird music and this is important because it’s the recordings and live performances of Los Dug Dug’s that continue to cast spells.
Their hypnotic swirls of surf rock, traditional Mexican music, psychedelic freakouts and acid-flute prog helped make that weird part of the late 1960s and early 1970s even weirder. And just as their music has endured, so has their weirdness. This is important. Especially when you consider that those predictable people who will say things like, “Keep San Francisco weird!” are the same people who will say, “Ok, maybe not THAT weird...” whenever they are confronted with actual weirdos. - Eric Shea, Hot Lunch
