Loose Time

Spoken word and visual artist Fiona Brehony joins guitarist José Dias, bassist John Pope, and drummer Johnny Hunter in an interchange between poetry and improvised music. Fiona Brehony is one of the most interesting upcoming Manchester-based interdisciplinary artists, interlacing moving image, text and performance. Her live work combines experimental language and performance to explore the beauty of isolation in vacuous spaces. José Dias is a musician, composer and researcher. His albums have been widely acclaimed and his solo album, “After Silence, Vol.1” (Clean Feed 2019), was described as ‘an introspective masterpiece’ (All About Jazz) and listed as one of best albums of 2019 (Giornale della Musica) and the essential Portuguese jazz albums of the new century (Improvisando). As a composer, he has scored music for animation, film and television, as well as theatre and contemporary dance. His music is strongly inspired by the visual arts and literature. John Pope is a bass player and composer based in Newcastle. His main focus as a creative musician explores the boundaries and combinations of jazz, free improvisation, rock and experimental music. He is an active member of the UK improvised music scene. He has performed solo as an improviser around the country, as well as in collaboration with internationally recognised artists, including appearances at festivals across the country as well as internationally in prestigious venues. Johnny Hunter is a northern UK-based drummer and composer who comes from a background of both the avant-garde and the more mainstream jazz. His own ‘chordless’ quartet, set up to explore the freedom and limitations of having no chordal instrument, have been recorded and broadcast by BBC Radio 3, and have performed across the country in notable venues such as London’s Ronnie Scott’s, the Manchester Jazz Festival, Birmingham Jazzlines at Symphony Hall, Liverpool International Jazz Festival, among many others.

Amy Coates Trio

Amy Coates is quickly making a name for herself as one of the most exciting young players on the Birmingham jazz and improvised music scene. As both a composer and a bassist Amy is beginning to earn a reputation as a musician with a great deal to say and who is comfortable playing in a variety of situations from straight-ahead jazz, to free improvisation, to multimedia art performances. If you haven’t heard Amy play before, this will be a fantastic introduction to a player who is likely to be a key player on the Birmingham scene. For this gig Coates will be joined by two award-winning graduates of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Olivia Murphy on saxophone and Steve Saunders on guitar.
