Andrea Motis & Fringe Orchestra – Loopholes
This year, Fringe Orchestra launches the Women in Jazz series, putting the most notable female jazz soloists as well as composers in the lead.
Spanish trumpeter and vocalist Andrea Motis made a name for herself by showing strong roots in traditional jazz. Her nimble voice and virtuoso trumpet solos have launched her to the top of jazz talents, already earning her projects with ensembles such as the renowned WDR Big Band. With her album Loopholes (2022) which she will present in this concert with new Fringe Orchestra arrangements by Jesse Passenier, Motis makes a more modern venture. Still closely related to the jazz tradition through her very own language, here she explores urban styles with hip-hop beats, funky songs and rich jazzy harmonies.
Fringe Orchestra is the annual crossover orchestra project of Conservatorium Maastricht. Composed of top students and alumni of the conservatoire, each edition tailors the line-up for a new guest soloist. This is done under the direction of artistic director Jesse Passenier, who both conducts the formation and arranges for it. Past editions have resulted in crossovers between a big band, a classical ensemble, and an electric band, and Fringe Orchestra plans to keep reinventing itself. The orchestra feels at home on stage, having shared it last season with Dutch melodic saxophonist Kika Sprangers. Previous collaborations have been with the inventive Belgian drummer Lander Gyselinck, known from the formation STUFF, the brilliant French vocalist Camille Bertault. turntablist DJ Vindictiv, trumpeter Carlo Nardozza, saxophonists Frank Deruytter and Reiner Witzel; Bex Burch on the gyil (Ghanaian xylophone), and electronic music performer Paul Frick; with whom they displayed a style range from jazz and funk, to world music, chanson, electro and hip-hop. Fringe Orchestra dares, chafes, makes you dance, overwhelms and inspires. The frontier is where it happens.

The talented singers of Conservatorium Maastricht present a diverse and dynamic programme of original compositions. Alexandra Soupourtzi-Michalaki and Eleni Dendrinou wrote a composition in their native language, Greek. Influences from other continents get sound and form in Nadine Nix's pieces. Radiohead, in turn, may provide a glimpse of recognition. Expect a colourful and heartfelt musical experience with rich harmonies, with the vocals taking centre stage.
The singers are accompanied by Patrick Britton (Keys), Davide Codazzo (bass) and Micky Laheij (drums).
