Longsword 101

What it’s about:

This will be the first class in is an eight-week introductory course to fencing with the German Longsword. In this class course we’ll learn the basics of language, handling, and movement with a two-handed sword, as well as the basics of how to attack and defend with one. We'll learn about how to negotiate for sparring sessions so that everyone is getting the most out of their free-fencing time. We will also begin to cover the basics of Falling, as this is an important skill within and beyond this activity.

Each class has a corresponding Overview document which has a recap of the class as well as relevant vocabulary.

We don't assume anything about anyone's fitness levels or ability to start and will enthusiastically find ways to work with disabilities. Whether you're a former or current D1 athlete or have never done anything physical in your life, you'll learn plenty from this course.

After the first class we'll send out a link to the club's Discord server, which is where we do the bulk of our communications.

How much?

The first class is explicitly free, after which point we ask for $15 per class (If you take multiple classes in a day, that still just counts as one class). This is payable via PayPal or Venmo.

Economic accessibility is important. Our policy is "pay what you can when you can."

When’s class?

Beginner’s courses run from 11am-12pm on Sundays. The main class runs immediately after that from 12pm-2pm for an hour of dagger and wrestling, and an hour of Longsword with Open Floor afterwards. Students in the 101 course are welcome to watch the main class but will have to complete the course to participate.

Where is class?

Class will be held in Pershing Field Park, on the grass between the community center and the tennis courts.

What you’ll need:

Bring water, as well as clothes and shoes that are comfortable to move in. We'll be training on grass, so keep in mind that the ground will not be perfectly homogenous.

There is no equipment needed to get started! Swords are provided. Just bring comfortable clothes that you can move in. You will need to acquire a fencing mask by Week 6, however it will not be necessary right away.

If you have a longsword already that you’d like to use for class, you’re welcome to bring it, however you may be asked not to use it if it’s considered unsafe to train with. If in doubt, don't hesitate to ask!

COVID rules:

Masks are optional. Vaccines are mandatory.
