You are invited to Long Play Sessions – the new and regular album appreciation gathering created by Brighton-based Producer & Musician Steve Baker.
For this edition hosted at The Rose Hill, we’ll be getting comfy and listening to the ground-breaking cult album Spirit of Eden by Talk Talk, played in full on vinyl. Immerse yourself in exceptional sound from our top notch PA (EM Acoustics, iykyk) and listen to the record front-to-back just as intended.
Pitchfork called this record ‘an under-rated masterpiece’ and NME ranked it at #95 in their top 500 albums of all time! So many great bands have been influenced by this avant-garde record from the previously poppy 80s band, and you’ll hear why!
Depending on who you believe, either a monument to the pretension of a pop band overreaching itself, or a beguiling if flawed experiment that reveals itself in a thousand lush layers. Now credited with inventing post-rock, its hushed-tones cognoscenti-led reputation seems to grow every single year. – NME on ‘Spirit of Eden’// Top 500 Albums of All Time
Brighton’s own Fujiya & Miyagi will be our guest DJs seeing us through the night, plus we have very special guest Phill Brown – the legendary engineer who recorded Spirit of Eden (uh huh!! huge news!) We’ll host a short Q&A with Phill after the album playback, so if you’ve any curiosity around the making of the album or anything album related, bring your questions!
Spirit of Eden was recorded in a blacked-out studio with an oil projector and strobe lighting. Engineer Phill Brown said that the album was “recorded by chance, accident, and hours of trying every possible overdub idea”. “There was very little communication with musicians who came in to play. They were led to a studio in darkness and a track would be played down the headphones.”
+++PLUS+++
a short live set from emerging local musician (TBA) at the start of the night!
