THIS AMBITIOUS DEBUT IS A FAMILY SAGA ACROSS 4 GENERATIONS - A GAY MAN LOOKS BACK ON HIS FAMILY'S HISTORY TO UNDERSTAND HOW HIS HERITAGE & IDENTITY ARE WOVEN BY HIS HOME STATE OF TECAS, & IN THE PROCESS TACKLES OUR ,MOST CONTENTIOUS SOCIAL CONFLICTS & TELLS A UNIVERSAL TALE OF SEARCHING FOR BELONGING.
--- "A delight, a revelation... a universal story, as all good books are." - Lone Star Literary Life
--- "I was spellbound by Julian & his husband. ... desperately affecting." - The New York Times

SUMMARY: "Lone Stars" follows the arc of 4 generations of a Texas family in a changing America - a historical sweep from 1950s South Texas, through the Houston suburbs of the 1980s & ’90s, to contemporary New York City, tackling our most contentious social conflicts to tell a macro tale through the microcosm of one family’s saga.
Julian Warner, a father at last, wrestles with a question his husband posed: What will you tell our son about the people you came from, now that they're gone?
Finding the answers takes Julian back in time to Eisenhower's immigration border raids, a love affair during the Vietnam War, crumbling marriages, queer migrations to Cambridge and New York, up to the disorienting polarization of Obama's second term. The characters of Lone Stars are complex and haunted, recognizable to Texans everywhere; the conflicts they endure, both internal and external, are felt for Texans, but also universal.
And in these answers lies a hope: that by uncloseting ourselves - as gay people, smart women, immigrants - we find power being able to declare ourselves & live authentically in the world. In the end, this proudly & emotionally defines what it means to be from the Lone Star State. At the same time, it is a universal tale - of searching for belonging, for our place & our tribe.
