About this Event

London’s Delftware Potters: Who were they? How did they work?

Clayground Collective regularly hosts River foreshore walks with leading Thames archaeologist, Mike Webber, to explore the history of ceramics and of London through participants' own discovery of ceramic sherds on the beach.

This specialist walk explores how the English Delftware riverside potteries developed and played a significant role in London’s early industrial history. Between 17th-18th centuries, London pothouses grew from small craft operations to mass producers of wares for domestic and international markets.

If you are interested in the history of craft, of London, of Lambeth, Southwark or Wapping, or have found ceramic fragments on the beach with Delftware's distinctive blue and white hand-painted decoration, you will have much to learn from this walk. There is inspiration here too for practising artists and potters.

The meeting point on the South Bank will be sent on booking. The walk starts at 9.30 and will end at 12.00.

The fee for this specialist walk is £25.00 per adult. There are 2 discounted child places per walk at £15.00 for ages 8-17. Please note minimum age is 8. These discounted places are limited to 2 as we need to cover the costs of licences and insurance. Please use the promo code CHILD if you wish to book a discounted place.

NB Please be aware the foreshore can be dangerous. It is not suitable for anyone who experiences difficulty using steps or walking on uneven ground.

Dogs are not allowed on these walks.

Clayground is licensed for group walks by the Port of London Authority.
