A late evening walk from Victoria to Covent Garden via Buckingham Palace following an evocative trail of gas-powered street lamps
About this Event

A small proportion of London's street lighting dates back to the late Georgian era. If you look carefully into the lanterns you will see that some are still gas-powered, offering a soft warm glow.

Experience the romance of gas lamps. Stroll down one of London's earliest gaslit streets, visit the site of a demonstration for King George III that made all this possible and experience a secluded Georgian alleyway lit by just three gas lamps.

We'll meet just before dusk as the gas lamps flicker into life, taking a route past Buckingham Palace, into Royal Parks, down The Mall, along Carlton Terrace and around Trafalgar Square to Covent Garden where we end our walk near some gas-powered lamps that have recently been awarded Grade II listing status. This is great news because this historic form of street lighting is threatened as we move away from fossil fuels, with many thousands of lanterns having already been retro-fitted with LED bulbs of varying types.

You'll also learn how these lanterns are maintained today – we may no longer need lamplighters every evening but there is still a team of enthusiastic men employed to keep these lovely old lamp lights burning.

My guiding style is inclusive, open and friendly. I design and research every tour myself – in fact, the research never ends. The walks and talks I offer are all on subjects that intrigue me and each one highlights a different facet of my personality. I am particularly interested in the architecture of our ever-changing streets and the little details on and above them. For more information, please visit www.janeslondonwalks.com
