W hat is Día de los Muertos?
Esta práctica reconocida como UNESCO Patrimonio Cultural tiene raíces en rituales prehispanos indígenos con los muertos. Los mexicas, mixtecas, texcocanos, zapotecas, tlaxcaltecas, totonacas y varios otros pueblos originarios de lo que hoy es México y a través del mundo tienen tradiciones de recordar y celebrar los muertos, incluyendo una celebración que coincide con el fin del ciclo agrícola del maíz, lo que hoy es el 1 y 2 de noviembre. En estos días, damos la bienvenida al retorno de los ánimos de nuestres seres querides que han fallecido, típicamente creando una ofrenda o altar incluyendo fotos, comidas, y bebidas que disfrutaban nuestres seres querides. En estos días celebramos su presencia con nosotres, y enfatizamos que la muerte no significa la desaparición.
This UNESCO-recognized Cultural Heritage practice is rooted in pre-hispanic indigenous rituals and relationships with the dead. The Mexicas, Mixtecas, Texcocanos, Zapotecas, Tlaxcaltecas, Totonacas and many other original peoples of present-day Mexico and across the globe all have traditions of remembering and celebrating the dead, including a celebration around the time of maize harvest, coinciding with days designated now as November 1st and 2nd. On these days, we welcome the return of the souls of our loved ones who have passed, typically making an altar or "ofrenda" including photographs, foods, and drinks enjoyed by our loved ones. On these days we celebrate their presence with us, and we emphasize that death does not mean disappeared.
