Join our fly-tying experts and learn how to tie some of the most effective flies for both salt and freshwater.
Classes will be held on Wednesday evenings through March 26, 2025.
Each night we offer a Beginner Class from 5-6:30pm followed by an Intermediate Class from 7-8:30pm. Please do not sign up for both.
Registration opens one week prior to each class at 8:00 am on this site/eventbrite.
No experience necessary. All materials provided. Free!
WEEK 11 Beginner
Maple Syrup. The Maple Syrup fly pattern, created by Alvin Theriault of Staceyville, Maine, is a simple yet effective fly designed primarily for brook trout and landlocked salmon. Theriault developed this pattern to imitate the nymphal stage of aquatic insects, as well as small baitfish and leeches. The fly is typically tied with a chenille body, in colors like tan, olive, or brown, and features a tail made of calf tail, which adds lifelike movement in the water. This pattern is most successful when fished with a slow strip retrieve or drifted along the bottom, making it ideal for deep lakes and slow-moving rivers. The Maple Syrup has become a favorite in the Northeast for its ability to attract fish in cold, clear waters.
