Join us for an unforgettable 10-mile circular walk through the Black Mountains, starting and finishing at the iconic ruins of Llanthony Priory, nestled in a remote valley just 30 minutes from Abergavenny. This moderate-to-challenging route combines forests, moorland ridges, and hidden valleys, offering a rewarding summer adventure without being a full-on mountain trek.
We begin by following scenic woodland and valley trails, gradually skirting the higher moorland of the Black Mountains.
Our journey takes us to the ancient church of Cwmyoy, famous for its dramatic leaning tower, which tilts more than the Tower of Pisa! Inside, we’ll find an ancient stone cross, and here we’ll take a break to enjoy our packed lunches in this peaceful historic setting.
The second half of the walk leads us down into the valley before climbing steadily through a beautiful forest, emerging onto a high ridgeline at 520m above sea level. From here, we’ll take in stunning 360-degree views of the surrounding valleys and mountains before beginning our descent through a deep ‘dingle’ valley, winding our way back to Llanthony Priory, where walkers are welcome to explore the atmospheric ruins free of charge.
This is an ideal walk for those looking for a summer challenge, with some climbs and a variety of terrains, but taken at a steady, enjoyable pace under the guidance of a professional walking leader. Expect breathtaking scenery, fascinating history, and a fantastic sense of achievement by the end!
