Llangattock Escarpment Guided Walk – Bannau Brycheiniog National Park
Join us on a guided walk through one of the most breath-taking areas of the Brecon Beacons National Park.
A circular hike will take you along the dramatic Llangattock Escarpment, through the beautiful Craig y Cilau National Nature Reserve, and past some fascinating historical sites. As we walk, you’ll be immersed in stunning views, rich history, and the chance to discover rare flora and fauna.
Event Highlights:
• Distance: 12 km
• Total Ascent: 300m
• Fitness Level: Moderate, with varied terrain – ideal for walkers with an average fitness level
• Duration: 4-5 hours (depending on pace and stops)
Route Overview:
Our walk will begin at the Llangattock Quarry car park, the gateway to this incredible part of the Brecon Beacons. The route follows the Llangattock Escarpment, a limestone ridge offering spectacular panoramic views over the lush Usk Valley below, with sweeping vistas of distant peaks such as Pen y Fan and Cribyn.
Key Highlights:
As we hike along the escarpment, you’ll enjoy uninterrupted views of the surrounding valleys, rolling hills, and dramatic ridges. The ridge offers a chance to see the entire Usk Valley and gives you a bird’s-eye view of the Brecon Beacons landscape, including the beautiful Fforest Fawr and the Black Mountains. These views will change with every turn, giving you the opportunity to capture some stunning photographs or simply enjoy the tranquility of this natural landscape.
The route takes us through the Craig y Cilau National Nature Reserve, a protected area rich in biodiversity. Here, you will find a fascinating range of rare and endemic plants that thrive in the unique limestone terrain. Look out for wild orchids, delicate ferns, and mosses that blanket the ground. The reserve is also home to rare species such as rock rose and quaking grass, making it a paradise for plant enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. As we walk, your guide will explain the ecology of the area and point out unique plants that thrive in this environment.
The area is teeming with wildlife. As we walk, we might spot birds such as red kites, buzzards, and ravens soaring above, while wild ponies and sheep graze on the slopes.
A scenic highlight of the route is the Pwll Gwy-rhoc pool, a peaceful, picturesque location tucked away in the landscape. The pool is surrounded by lush vegetation, making it a perfect spot to pause and enjoy the serenity of the surroundings. Keep an eye out for birdlife here as well, as it is a popular spot for both waterfowl and small birds.
The walk also takes us to Mynydd Llangattock and the Twr Pen-cyrn cairns, ancient stone markers that stand as silent witnesses to the area’s rich history. These cairns are likely remnants of old routes or ceremonial sites, adding an element of mystery to the hike. From these locations, the views are even more dramatic, offering a perfect spot to pause, reflect, and take in the magnificent surroundings.
The terrain on this walk is varied, with some sections of rocky paths, grassy meadows, and limestone outcrops. The route is moderate in difficulty, with a total ascent of 300 meters, so it’s ideal for those with an average level of fitness. There will be some moderate inclines, but nothing too strenuous.
Be prepared for a mix of uneven ground, and wear sturdy hiking boots to navigate the rocky and sometimes slippery terrain. The weather can change quickly, so it’s best to bring layers and waterproofs to ensure comfort throughout the walk.
