Come join us for a living history event at Frenchtown on Residential Schools. Judy Fortney invites the public to a living history presentation on Chemawa Indian Training School, which is the second oldest Native American Boarding School. Established in 1880, and modeled after Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvani, at it's height of enrollment, over 1,000 Native American children attended Chemawa. Like other boarding schools, the object of the school was cultural erasure and assimilation. Judy Fortney's father, Duane Matthew Duffy, and her grandmother, Mabel Rainville, both attended Chemawa, along with other relatives and Metis children from the region.
Bring water, questions, and be ready to listen!
