Live Wire is thrilled to partner with Literary Arts and the Portland Book Festival for a show at the Alberta Rose Theatre with Jeff Hiller, Tara Roberts, Reginald Dwayne Betts, and Anna Tivel!
Live Wire Radio is an independently produced radio show based in Portland, Oregon. Hosted by Luke Burbank and announced by Elena Passarello, the show artfully blends unpredictable conversation, live music, and original comedy featuring all kinds of cultural talent and creative minds, from emerging artists to established acts. Live Wire champions discovery by producing engaging, spirited, and genuine live and listening experiences for a local and national audience.
About the guests:
Jeff Hiller is an actor, writer and comedian who has appeared on TV shows such as "Somebody Somewhere," "American Horror Story: NYC," "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend," "30Rock," and "Law and Order: CI," among numerous others. His film roles include "Greta," "Morning Glory," "Ghost Town," and "Set it Up," and he has performed on Broadway, off-Broadway, in Shakespeare in the Park, Disney musicals, and regional theater. Jeff regularly performs solo shows at Joe’s Pub at the Public Theatre and improvises at The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in LA and NYC.
Tara Roberts spent the last seven years following, diving with, and telling stories about Black scuba divers as they searched for and helped document slave shipwrecks around the world. Her journey was turned into an award-winning National Geographic-produced podcast called “Into the Depths” and featured in the March 2022 issue of National Geographic magazine. She became the first Black female explorer ever to be featured on the cover of the magazine. That same year, she was also named the Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year. Currently, Tara is an Explorer in Residence at the National Geographic Society. Her latest book is "Written in the Waters: A Memoir of History, Home and Belonging." Tara is also a former magazine editor and indie publisher, a nonprofit communications director, and editor of several non-fiction books for girls. She calls Atlanta home but loves to hit the road. Her motto is: “Have suitcase, will travel.”
Reginald Dwayne Betts is the author of three books of poetry, a lawyer, the founder and CEO of Freedom Reads, as well as a former MacArthur Fellow (2021). His most recent collection. "Doggerel," is a majestic new volume of poetry that marks a transformative stage in his life and career. This resplendent tableau ruminates on dogs and the ostensibly trivial joys that transform us—peonies blooming, a “symphony” of wine glasses, father-son bike rides, basketball, seeing and being seen, surrendering to a lover’s touch. Channeling dogs both literally and metaphorically, these poems trace everything from the companionship of Betts’s own Jack Russell Terrier to the ways we are dogged by our deepest desires for connection, love, and repair.
Recorded live in a circle with some of her dearest friends, acclaimed singer-songwriter Anna Tivel has released her 7th studio album, "Animal Poem," on Fluff and Gravy Records. The album came to life through intimate conversation—and it is an attempt to explore the mystery, rawness, and inherently indescribable nature of the human experience. How does our attention shape the way we touch the natural world? In the face of endless avarice and cruelty, how do we talk about the realness of love? Known for her introspective and narrative-driven folk music, Anna writes songs that often focus on vignettes of ordinary people's lives and struggles, drawing inspiration from small, everyday stories. No Depression praises her as "one of the finest storytellers modern folk music has to offer" while NPR Music’s Ann Powers calls her “unmatched as an empath among her folk-leaning peers… [with] the voice of a wobbly angel and a gift for making the poetic palpable.”
