No scripts, no notes, no props, no rants, no stand up, no performance art, no poems, - just the truth* in story form!
Put your name in the "hat"** for the chance to tell your own 5 to 10 minute story live on stage, or just enjoy listening to the stories of your friends and neighbors: LIVE on the 4th Tuesdays of each month at New Prospect Theatre.
(If you're planning to share a story you MUST read our guidelines available below, on our website, and on our podcast)
(*as you remember it)
(**it's never been a hat)
Sign Ups and Pre Show Party Starts at 6:30 pm.
We have pre show audience polls, anonymous questionnaires, themed wine/beer based cocktails, and lots to look at and do before the show starts at 7:00!
The act of sharing our most authentic selves with other people in a safe and encouraging environment creates connection, community and compassion.
At Bellingham Story Hour we strive to create a fun, welcoming, and appreciative atmosphere. We love gathering with new and treasured friends each month to hear true stories featuring all the weird and lovely things we experience as humans.
We choose a theme each month! Check our website for themes, workshop info, special events and to get tickets!
Basic Guidelines for Storytellers:
Stories are always told with no notes, no scripts, no props, and no hidden agendas and while telling stories is therapeutic it is not a replacement for therapy. Do the work and then tell the stories.
Stories can be entertaining, heartwarming, educational, cringe inducing, shame releasing, vulnerable, weird, and all of the things in-between but they are always true, always your own experience, and always rewarding to tell and hear.
Story Hour will have themes chosen ahead of time and we will select performers who submit their name into a random drawing process.
Stories must be TRUE and less than 10 minutes long!
Stories must be about YOU. Your story, your version, your view.
Performers for Story Hour will be chosen randomly from participants who self-submitted for the evening
All stories will be between five to ten minutes with a time moderator to help folx stay in their time limit
Please offer content warnings for any seriously triggering subjects presented in your story
Censoring will not be employed, but if a story being presented is clearly breaking Community Agreements or causing clear harm to the audience, the performer will be asked to leave the stage and future performances may depend on a prescreening from the host.
All ages will be in attendance, so plan accordingly.
Attending a workshop is not necessary to participate but it can make a huge difference in both your content and delivery!
BSH Community Commitments
These are the commitments all participants of the Bellingham Story Hour agree to honor:
All stories are true as the storyteller remembers them
Subjects that cause harm to the community are not appropriate for Bellingham Story Hour. Harming an audience can mean exposing them to extremely violent acts, assault (sexual/childhood/other), or extreme gore without their consent or warning. There are also some subjects that when glorified or justified can continue further harm. These subjects are: Racism, Homophobia, Anti-Trans rhetoric, Bigotry toward community groups, ableism, body shaming, suicide/self-harm, violence against animals, child abuse, and severe morality judgments as programmed by faith.
Bellingham Story Hour presumes participant willingness and commitment to responsibly engage the ideas raised by stories addressing challenging topics in a broad range of cultural contexts. Participants should be alert to the fact that many stories/performances include content, imagery, language and situations that might be challenging and/or disturbing to some. Participants are expected to engage seriously with stories addressing diverse spiritual traditions, obscenity, censorship, violence, war, race, religious fundamentalism, pornography, nudity, transgender identity, homosexuality, AIDS, sexual labor, feminism, abortion, self -harm/suicide, and PTSD, among other potentially controversial topics. By Participating in Bellingham Story Hour or Slam events, Participants are obligating themselves to hearing/reading/viewing/discussing such works. Additionally, Participants choosing to be in the space are making a commitment to treating these subjects, community members, and the instructional staff with courtesy and respect.
