Pat Collins, illustrious bassist, to grace The Night Owl!
The Night Owl and Dorland Music are excited to announce a thrilling night of music showcasing illustrious bassist, Pat Collins. Pat provides a stirring musical adventure that will captivate the audience.
Born in Qualicum Beach, B.C., bassist Pat Collins relocated to Toronto in 1988 and quickly rose to prominence as a leading figure in the Canadian Jazz Scene. Throughout his career, Collins has shared stages with jazz luminaries like Oscar Peterson, Joe Henderson, and Dizzy Gillespie. His collaborations extend to renowned Canadian musicians such as Moe Koffman, Rob McConnell, and Ed Bickert, solidifying his status as a respected presence in both local and international jazz circles.
In January 2005, Pat released his inaugural album as a leader, under Cornerstone Records, titled "In the Moment." This album showcased collaborations with some of Canada's top-tier jazz musicians, including Mike Murley, Reg Schwager, and Barry Elmes. Garnering enthusiastic acclaim, "In the Moment" received praise such as "a CD that's very easy to like" from Richard Bourcier of JazzReview.com and "a classy contribution to the jazz canon" from Geoff Chapman of the Toronto Star. The Pat Collins Quartet earned nominations at the 2005 National Jazz Awards for "Acoustic Group of the Year" and the album itself was nominated for "Album of the Year" in 2006. Additionally, Pat received nominations for "Acoustic Bassist of the Year" in both 2005 and 2006.
In May 2020, Pat Collins unveiled his second album as a leader, also under Cornerstone Records. Titled "Time Well Spent," this album features two of Canada's foremost jazz musicians: Tom Szczesniak on accordion and Reg Schwager on guitar. The album showcases compositions by all members of the trio, as well as tunes by Paul Simon and Michel Legrand. Garnering critical acclaim, "Time Well Spent" was selected as one of Jazz FM91's top 25 jazz albums of 2020 and ranked among the top 20 Canadian jazz albums of 2020 by the Ottawa Citizen. Jazz FM's Heather Bambrick praised the synergy among the musicians, describing the album as "poignant and gorgeous," while Peter Hum of the Ottawa Citizen hailed it as a long-awaited follow-up, focusing on "lovely and evocative" music.
In addition to his musical pursuits, Pat is deeply involved in education, serving as a full-time faculty member at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario. Prior to this role, he spent many years teaching at Humber College in Toronto. Beyond the academic setting, Pat has dedicated himself to nurturing young talents through various summer music camps, including the Interprovincial Music Camp, the Comox Valley Youth Music Centre, the Kincardine Summer Music Festival, and the National Music Camp. Currently, he contributes his expertise to the Prairielands Jazz Camp in Regina, Saskatchewan, and the Jazz for Adults camp at Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario.
Pat is also actively engaged as both an adjudicator and a clinician at music festivals across Canada, including prestigious events such as Musicfest Canada, The Golden Horseshoe Musicfest, and the West Coast Jazz Festival.
