About this Event

The Night Owl and Dorland Music are thrilled to announce a thrilling night of music showcasing multitalented saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Gene Hardy. Gene provides an exhilarating musical voyage that will leave the audience mesmerized.

Gene Hardy, a versatile Canadian multi-instrumentalist proficient on saxophone, violin, musical saw, theremin, and vocals, embarked on his musical journey in Victoria, British Columbia. Commencing violin lessons at age 9, he delved into the saxophone a year later. After studying at the Victoria Conservatory of Music and UVic, Hardy relocated to Toronto in 1986 where he swiftly became a member of the Canadian alternative rock band Bourbon Tabernacle Choir.

Following the dissolution of Bourbon Tabernacle Choir in the mid-1990s, Hardy became a sought-after horn player in Canada, contributing to various recording projects and live performances across the United States and Canada. Notably, he served as the musical director and featured soloist for Michael Bublé and joined Ronnie Hawkins' band, The Hawks.

From 2000 to 2005, Hardy received nominations for Horn Player of the Year at Canada's Maple Blues Awards, acknowledging his significant contributions to the blues genre both onstage and in the studio.

Gene's versatile and talented contributions are evident across a wide range of albums. From the early 1990s with projects like Bourbon Tabernacle Choir's "Sister Anthony" and Big Sugar's self-titled album, to later collaborations with iconic bands like Barenaked Ladies on "Gordon" and "Maybe You Should Drive," Gene has made an indelible mark. His impact extends over the years with notable appearances on albums such as Rheostatics' "Whale Music" and "Introducing Happiness," as well as Veda Hille's "Spine." His later ventures include contributions to Esthero's groundbreaking releases like "We R in Need of a Musical Revolution" and "Wikked Lil' Grrrls," among others, showcasing Gene's enduring presence and influence in the music industry. In addition, Hardy has garnered acclaim for his adept performances on the musical saw, contributing to various recordings and appearing in commercials for brands such as Halls Cough Drops, Kia Cars, and Scott's Turfbuilder. His eagerly awaited debut instrumental saw album, "Musical Saw Encounters," was released in early 2015.

Throughout his career, Hardy has released four solo albums and remains active in touring, performing, and recording, while dividing his time between Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria, and New Orleans. His discography includes "Gene Hardy & Sparkjiver" (2000), "FunkyBluesyJazzyChurchy" (2002), "Blow!Blow!Blow!" (2004), and "Gene Hardy & The Pip Squeek Orchestra" (2007).
