About this Event
Diane Roblin, a prominent figure in Canada's jazz scene, has cultivated a vibrant career in music. As a composer, pianist, and band leader, she effortlessly combines technical prowess with a deep understanding of music's ability to connect people. Based in Toronto, Diane leads the LIFE FORCE sextet, acclaimed as a "virtuosic ensemble of Canadian hotshots" by JAZZFM 91.1. The sextet, comprising John Johnson, George Koller, Kevin Turcotte, Tim Shia, and Jeff LaRochelle, performs Diane's diverse compositions, which draw from her wide-ranging influences, spanning from high-energy jazz-funk to impressionism. Her latest LIFE FORCE album has been praised as a "genuine, wild ride you wish wouldn’t end" by midwestrecords.com and as "something unique to offer jazz fans" by JAZZFM 91.1. It also earned a spot on All About Jazz's top 10 for 2019.
Trained as a classical pianist in Buffalo, NY, Diane's studies at York University in Toronto encompassed a broad spectrum, including world music with Trichy Shankaran, electronic music with David Rosenboom, and jazz improvisation. She also participated in workshops with notable musicians such as Ornette Coleman, Karl Berger, Jack DeJonnette, and Lee Konitz. Her compositions and improvisations are influenced by a diverse array of artists, including McCoy Tyner, Debussy, Carla Bley, Herbie Hancock, and Bartok.
Diane's musical journey has seen her collaborate with various groups, ranging from the groundbreaking rock band Rough Trade to avant-garde improvisers like Charles Gayle. In addition to her work with the Life Force band, she is a member of several other ensembles, including the Ossingtones, Lady Janela, Ladyfinger, Portage, and Fisher/Luciani/Roblin. Over the years, she has performed alongside numerous acclaimed musicians, such as Bob Brough, Richard Underhill, and Michael Snow, among others.
Aligning herself with the Association of Canadian Women Composers, Diane thrives as a contemporary free-jazz/experimental music improviser, composer, and solo artist, having recently collaborated with Sarah Weaver’s NowNet Inc. Lab Ensemble and Trio Janela on International Earth Day for a series of telematic internet concerts.
