Biography Malik Alston has delighted audiences in the United States and abroad, inviting them into his unique world of sound. He is one of Detroit’s premier music producers, DJs, vocalists, and performers. He produces and spins without boundaries, often fusing a multitude of styles to create innovations in sound. He currently performs original works on keys/vocals with his band, Malik Alston & The Linwood Ensemble, with well-received appearances at the Movement Festival, House of Blues (Chicago) as the opening act for Les Nubians, African World Festival, Allied Media Conference, Jazz Café, Spot Lite, and Karl’s. Malik's recent, successful EP releases include Outside Of The Box and Badriyyah Wazeerud-Din’s You Are The One (Truth Manifest Records), In A Better Way (Mother Tongue), Malik Alston: Rebirth EP (Hardmatter), MinimalSoul presents: Painted Pictures & Malik Alston Trio (Minimalsoul), Malik Alston Presents Painted Pictures: Air (The Jazz Diaries). His excellent solo works include Malik's Mind, Poetic Reflections, Conscious Exposure, Dinner Music, This Music Is Life and Future: Love, Life, Vibration (Truth Manifest Records). He was the founder and executive producer of the vibrant jazzfusionhouse band Painted Pictures, whose well-received projects include Tuxedo Sessions (Truth Manifest Records) and Tuxedo Sessions Japan Edition (Truth Manifest Records/P-Vine Records). Malik has performed live/DJ sets several times at the Movement Festival and Charivari Detroit (live set, Malik Alston & Badriyyah). He was the band director and performed live with Osunlade, for his well-received 2022 Movement Weekend Yoruba Soul Orchestra event at Spot Lite Detroit. Malik toured the United States with Dwele and toured as a founding member of the DJ collective Rhythmic Fusion. He has appeared at the Velvet Room in Windsor (Ontario, Canada), and as a solo artist at Club Module in Tokyo, Japan (Beatdown Sessions Series). Malik has produced poetry and music events at the Detroit Institute of Arts. He was featured with the poetry troupe EmRuop and in concert with the Last Poets, Gil Scott-Heron, and Jessica Care Moore. He executive produced The Pocket, a live performance/DJ series at 5th Avenue Downtown. He was a featured vocalist at the 2020 Detroit International Jazz Festival with Black Light Collective, the 2019 Concert of Colors with Dave McMurray, and the 2017 Concert of Colors with the Don Was 10th Anniversary All-Star Revue. Malik has performed with Les Nubians, Amp Fiddler, Louie Vega, Don Was, Dave McMurray, Osunlade, Blue Nefertiti, The Linwood Ensemble, Painted Pictures, Baatin and Robert Glasper, among many artists. He has written and produced for many.
