About this Event
Islands often attract migrating birds, and Governors Island is a prime birding spot year-round – nearly every species passing through NYC can be found here! We’ll explore the Nolan Park woods and grasslands in search of long-distance migrants like the Great Crested Flycatcher, Cape May Warbler, Gray-cheeked Thrush, and Bobolink, all of which we’ve spotted on previous walks. Then, we’ll head to Yankee Pier to visit the Common Tern colony, one of the few accessible seabird nesting sites in the city. May is also an ideal time for observing spring shorebird migration, with various sandpiper and plover species frequenting the piers. We’ll meet outside the LMCC’s Art Center. Try to catch the ferry by 9:30am or earlier. Bring binoculars if you have them – we’ll have a limited number available to share.
