Join us for an enriching evening with Dr. Jonathan Kay Kamakawiwoʻole Osorio, Dean of Hawaiʻinuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge, as he presents"Intimacies: Poetics of a People Beloved." Originally delivered to the Pacific History Association in 2014 and later published by the Australia National University Press in the collection Islands of Hope (2022) edited by Paul D'Arcy and Daya Kuan.

This special Live from the Atherton series event offers the opportunity to engage with the poetics of Hawaiʻi’s past and present. Our ongoing Author Series engages participants with an inspiring evening of history and knowledge. HPR’s Live from the Atherton events will be filmed, recorded and photographed for future broadcasts and online content.

About Dr. Osorio:

Dr. Jonathan Kay Kamakawiwoʻole Osorio is the Dean of Hawaiʻinuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge. He is married to Mary Carol Dunn and has fathered five children, all reasonably well adjusted human beings. Dr. Osorio received his PhD in History from the University of Hawaiʻi in 1996 and was on the faculty of the Kamakakūokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies, serving as director of the Centerfrom 2003 to 2008. As a professor, he has collaborated with numerous other faculty and students in many departments to bring recognition for indigenousknowledge, championing Hawaiian language, performing arts and the study of Hawaiian and Pacific Islands history and contemporary issues through conferences, forums and publications. He has published broadly and both of his books, Dismembering Lāhui (2002) and The Value of Hawaiʻi (2010), co-edited with Craig Howes, have won local publishing awards. Dean Osorio serves on several boards and committees in support of the Hawaiian sovereignty and protection of sacred places in Hawaiʻi. Live From the Atherton is Hawai‘i Public Radio’s new flagship event series, featuring music performances, authors and other creative, original thinkers at our Atherton Studio. Throughout 2025, Hawai'i Public Radio will host ticketed events that feature a range of music, from Hawaiian, classical, jazz and indie, as well as authors and speakers across genres including fiction, young adult, keiki and Hawaiian history.

The Live from the Atherton Author Series takes place on select Thursday evenings at the Atherton Performing Arts studio at Hawaiʻi Public Radio. The author series events begin at 6 p.m. unless otherwise noted. Doors open thirty minutes before the event starts.

This event will be filmed, recorded and photographed. Your presence constitutes your release of all rights to your recorded voice and image, which may be used in projects by Hawaiʻi Public Radio.

Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis — advance ticket purchase is strongly suggested. General admission tickets are $20.

Ticket Policy: Ticket sales are final. Sorry, no refunds.

Parking: Street parking is available in the surrounding neighborhood (metered parking is free after 6 p.m.).
