In 2024, Guțu was honored with the Leica Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award for this poignant series of black-and-white photographs, which explore life in the Republic of Moldova. Through a dreamlike visual language, Homeland reveals the quiet resilience of a country marked by economic hardship, high unemployment, and emigration. Around one quarter of the population has left the country in the last twenty years for economic reasons. Left behind are either those who are too old to go abroad to work – and the children of those who have departed. Maria Guțu is one of those children. Raised by her grandparents in a isolated area in northern Moldova, she processes her memories of that time through these images created between 2019 and 2023.
The exhibit will be on view until February 15th, 2026.
