Fiction Book Group with Alexis discussing The Door by Magda Szabó, Translated by Len Rix
About this Event

Hosted by our neighbors at Die Stammkneipe Brooklyn (710 Fulton St.) and led by former Greenlight general manager Alexis, our fiction book group meets monthly to discuss paperback fiction, reading broadly in contemporary fiction with the occasional diversion into classics. For October, the group will discuss The Door, from Hungarian writer Magda Szabó and translated by Len Rix, published as part of the NYRB Classics series. The Door is an unsettling exploration of the relationship between two very different women. Magda is a writer, educated, married to an academic, public-spirited, with an on-again-off-again relationship to Hungary’s Communist authorities. Emerence is a peasant, illiterate, impassive, abrupt, seemingly ageless. They share a kind of love—at least until Magda’s long-sought success as a writer leads to a devastating revelation.
