About this Event

Join us for brunch, fun, and learning at 518 Valencia Street (at 16th)! Walk away with a Spark Deck and other materials you can use right away in your program.

Today's topic is Writing!

Afterschool and summer programs are truly the perfect place for youth to get excited about literacy! From writing and directing movies; to creating comics, graphic novels, and zines; to curling up in a cozy corner with an exciting audiobook, this cohort will work together to develop participant-centered activities and spaces that encourage authentic literacy development for all youth.

In each session, we will explore a different area of literacy and create a plan for how to encourage and support the growth of this skill for youth within our programs. While all sessions will touch on English Language Learning, our final session will emphasize specific strategies for working with second (or third!) language learners. Join us for this Cohort to get inspired to build up a fun slate of literacy-building tools and tricks for all grade levels.

Goal: In this session, we will focus on how to support the development of writing skills for the youth in our programs

Objectives: By the end of this session, participants will:

  • Gain clarity on what writing skills are expected at each grade level through the Common Core State Standards
  • Learn and share ways to make writing practice fun and inspiring for all youth
  • Create a plan for how to implement what was learned in the session

Note that this session will take place at Mission Graduates, 518 Valencia Street (at 16th).

Parking/Transportation: BART/Muni 16th Street Station; Paid parking lots nearby.
