About this Event
Join The New York Public Library's Center for Educators and Schools for a special screening of The Truth About Reading (2023). This powerful documentary explores the current state of literacy across the nation, shedding light on challenges and opportunities for parents, teachers and students.
Following the screening, we will be joined by two experts at the forefront of literacy intervention in New York—Laura Ascenzi-Moreno, PhD, and Molly Ness, PhD. Explore their areas of expertise, innovative strategies, and experiences tackling literacy issues in our community during this discussion
Laura Ascenzi-Moreno, PhD, is a professor and bilingual program coordinator in the Childhood, Bilingual, and Special Education Department at Brooklyn College. Her work focuses on understanding the connection between ideologies and practice and, in particular, examining how monolingual spaces within literacy instruction—such as assessment, guided reading, and the use of mentor texts—can be centered on emergent bilinguals’ multilingual and multimodal practices.
