About this Event
Linocut is a very accessible creative form, easy to learn and produces great results, and which lends itself to the most simple and the most intricate of images. It’s also very flexible and easy to do at home.
Lydia will guide you through the basics of using Linocut tools to carve your designs, the kinds of resources available and methods for printing to fabric.. you then have the whole day to create, play and explore. There will be ample fabric to test on, a rainbow of paints to use and Lydia’s own print blocks available to experiment with.
All materials and tools for the workshop will be provided. In addition, everyone will have a blank cotton tea towel and tote to print on and take home at the end of the workshop.
*There is an additional option to buy a Take Home Linocut Kit which includes 5 linocut tools, 2 pieces of 15 Softcut Lino, an Inking tray, 3 paint sponges and 50ml of fabric paint of your choice from Lydia’s collection*
Course Level: Suitable for Complete Beginners but also Intermediate – those with some printing experience.
Artist bio:
Lydia Finney is an artist, printer and maker based on the Suffolk Coast. Moving to a remote village from Brussels 10 years ago, her love of fabrics, a knack for sewing and with her local surroundings abounding with inspiration, Lydia started printing using wooden blocks and her own linocut designs to create items such as cushions, lampshades and zipper-bags under the business name Lovely Lydia.
Living in a beautiful corner of the world betwixt the sea, the river, the forests and the farmlands of Suffolk, her design motifs include hares and seedheads, bees and moths, lobster and crabs. Her style is sometimes naïve, sometimes intricate, evoking the wild things around her and making her designs into items of purpose and use.
Having not been trained in art, yet making a living from it, Lydia emphasises that lack of background should not inhibit anyone from finding ways to express their creativity. She loves to show students how easy it can be to create something stunning! She would always be the first to encourage someone to “give it a go” when it comes to being creative- “No one starts as an expert, it’s fun to try new skills and see your skill and confidence grow.” She especially loves to see the variety of ideas and creations students come up with. “We all take such different approaches to things, I love seeing where the inspiration flows from!”
