Create your own relief printing stamp to print a design or surface pattern onto fabric. You will learn how to carve a lino block using cutting tools, how to use relief inks and how to develop and print imagery onto textiles. The focus is to teach you some basic lino cutting skills and produce some printed and patterned fabric pieces to take away with you. What experience do I need?
This course is suitable for complete beginners in both linocut and printing onto fabric, those with existing experience working with fabric will still benefit by exploring new ways of printing imagery onto cloth.
What will I make?
You will make one or more lino stamps, which you will use to print small samples and larger pieces of fabric – you will also print onto a tote bag. You will finish with cloth pieces that would make excellent cushion covers, bags, tapestries, patches, pencil cases and pouches.
Who is my tutor?
Susie Rumsby is a Printmaking Instructor at Leeds College of Art, where she introduces students to screen print, etching, linocut, monoprint and bookbinding. Before coming to teach art in Leeds, Susie studied printmaking in Portland, Oregon, where she also worked as a master printer’s apprentice, an artists’ assistant, and at Portland Art Museum helping to put on shows of prints and drawings. Susie is a founding committee member of Leeds Print Workshop, and believes in making the fun of printmaking open to as many people as possible.
Do I need to bring anything?
We will provide some sample-sized pieces of cloth for you to print on, as well as an A5 piece of lino for you to carve into one or more stamps. Lino carving tools and printing inks will be provided, as well as any other tools needed for the process. A plain tote bag will also be provided, which you can print with your best design of the day!
We recommend that students bring up to a metre of plain cotton with them to the class. (Leeds residents might want to check out B&M Fabrics near the market for inexpensive cloth!) Please bring along reference photos, sketches and ideas if you wish, and we will have examples of patterns and designs to help inspire you.

Accessibility
Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible. By their nature, some printmaking processes involve an amount of physical effort. Leeds Print Workshop is based in a basement studio at Patrick Studios, a bespoke venue for artists operated by East Street Arts. It is wheelchair accessible, with a lift, larger than standard doors and accessible toilet facilities. We recognise that everybody’s accessibility needs may differ, therefore please email us at [email protected] to discuss any concerns you may have before booking. There is one blue badge car parking space to the side of the building on Rider Street, subject to availability.
Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
